PIP – or Personal Injury Protection Insurance - is essentially a short-term medical insurance for auto accident victims.

Some PIP plans will cover only the driver while others may cover passengers or even pedestrians. Some plans carry no deductible while others have deductibles of $250, $500 or even $1,000. Regardless of these variations, however, PIPs work generally the same, covering 80% of expenses related to accident injury and recovery up to a total of $10,000.

Some policies allow for additional coverage options that can pay 100% of medical expenses or up to a higher total amount. PIP funds can also be used to cover lost wages or to pay for services needed as a result of injury such as child-care or lawn maintenance, but the total funds are still limited.
